Tim Burton Is Not Interested In Making Superhero Movies Anymore

The director discusses the possibility of making another ‘Batman’ film.

Tim Burton’s 1988 classic, ‘Beetlejuice,’ made a comeback with a sequel set for release in September this year. The director mentioned the idea of also reviving his version of ‘Batman’ in a recent chat with Variety.

“At the moment, I would say no. Like I said, I come at things from different points of view, so I would never say never to anything. But, at the moment, it’s not something I’d be interested in,” he explained.

Burton’s ‘Batman’ saw release in 1989, followed by the sequel, ‘Batman Returns,’ in 1992. Michael Keaton starred as the title hero in both films, having a dark and stylized take.

The actor returned as Batman for a cameo in DC’s ‘The Flash’ last year. The film also references Tim Burton’s abandoned ‘Superman Lives,’ which he wasn’t too pleased with.

“No, I don’t have regrets,” the director mentioned of the canceled project in a chat with BFI. “I will say this: when you work that long on a project and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life. Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and it wasn’t there yet. But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you, a little bit.”

“But also, it goes into another AI thing, and this is why I think I’m over it with the studio. They can take what you did, Batman or whatever, and culturally misappropriate it, or whatever you want to call it,” he added. “Even though you’re a slave of Disney or Warner Brothers, they can do whatever they want. So, in my latter years of life, I’m in quiet revolt against all this.”

Batman will appear on the screen again with a different actor in the upcoming DC Universe film, ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ Andy Muschietti will sit on the director’s chair for it.
