James Cameron Reveals If He’ll Return To The ‘Alien’ Franchise

The director was behind the 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien.’

Ridley Scott recently returned as a producer for Fede Álvarez’s new movie ‘Alien: Romulus.’ Given Scott’s return, The Guardian recently asked James Cameron if he might also come back to the franchise.

“It’s kind of trampled ground at this point,” he said. “I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I’ve got 23 other projects in the queue before that hypothetical one, so I’m going to guess, with me turning 70, that ain’t gonna happen. You’ve got to pick your battles at some point. You know what I mean?”

‘Romulus’ premiered in theaters in mid-August. Álvarez, who co-wrote the film with Rodo Sayagues, got help from both Cameron and Scott during the creative process, though the ‘Avatar’ director said his involvement was minimal.

“I wasn’t really helping out,” he explained. “I know Fede, the director, and very early on he and his writing partner came to me and said, ‘Got any ideas?’ – no, they had plenty of ideas but they just wanted to kind of, I don’t know, pilgrimage to Mecca or something like that. But that was years ago, then they went off and wrote their thing and I had nothing to do with it.”

Cameron said he did offer Álvarez some feedback after watching an early cut of the film but stressed he couldn’t take the credit for the final product.

His words continued, “Six months ago, or so [Álvarez] shared an early cut of the film with me and I gave him some notes for like an hour. I don’t want to take any credit whatsoever. If the film is great, I don’t want to take any credit; if it sucks, not my fault! Seriously, it’s his thing, so credit is due where it’s due, and, from what I’m hearing, it’s pretty good.”

‘Alien: Romulus’ made $285.7 million at the box office against a budget of $80 million. The film also received a positive review from 80% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
