Frank Grillo will take on the role of Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ this fall. After that, he will return in live-action, with appearances in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and ‘Superman,’ as revealed by James Gunn.
“He is a really cool character that Frank has been molding,” the DC co-CEO recently told Entertainment Weekly. “The character’s also in ‘Superman,’ and he’s an incredibly important part in ‘Peacemaker.’ He is one of the primary characters in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2. So, we get to see this character from different angles, and he is not simple.”
Rick Flag Sr. is already known in the DC Universe as the father of Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad.’ According to Gunn, “This isn’t just a good guy, not at all. We see all different sides of his character.”
“He is morally a complex human being. Grillo is somebody who I’ve known for a little while, and I’ve wanted to work with him for a long time. He was one of the first people that I talked to when I took over the studio like ‘we’re going to find something cool for you,’ and now he is everywhere.”
Grillo’s work as Rick Flag Sr. will be part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s new policy for the DC Universe. Characters will be played by the same actor across all animated and live-action projects.
The ‘Captain America’ actor’s animated show will premiere on Max on December 5. The voice cast for ‘Creature Commandos’ will also include David Harbour as Frankenstein, Indira Varma as The Bride, Sean Gunn as GI Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, and Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky.
