A new Hunger Games prequel named ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ just received an official synopsis from Scholastic.
The book is written by Suzanne Collins, and it takes place 24 years before the events of ‘The Hunger Games.’ It focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell. This Games is different from the others as the rules were changed to include 48 tributes instead of the usual 24. So, this makes it even more dangerous.
The protagonist of the story is Haymitch Abernathy. He’s probably a familiar name to you if you’re a fan of the series. Haymitch is chosen as a tribute from District 12 in the book and is sent to the Capitol to compete in the deadly contest. “He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town,” the synopsis reveals.
“As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail,” it continues. “But there’s something in him that wants to fight … and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.”
In a previous statement, Suzanne Collins explained that the story explores themes like propaganda and how those in power control the narrative. “I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,” she added.
‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ follows the success of ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.’ Lionsgate quickly announced plans to adapt ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ into a movie after that book’s success.
