David Fincher is set to take on a new project, and this time it’s an English-language version of ‘Squid Game.’
According to sources, Fincher will develop the series, and the project is expected to start in 2025. This will be the first time ‘Squid Game’ gets a scripted offshoot in English.
Details about the series are still unclear, but rumors suggest it could take place in the U.S. with ‘Utopia’ writer Dennis Kelly involved in the script. Fincher’s 1997 thriller ‘The Game’ had a similar storyline where real-life people became part of a dangerous and twisted competition, much like ‘Squid Game’s plot.
Fincher has a long history with Netflix. He directed ‘House of Cards,’ the crime thriller series ‘Mindhunter’ and worked on the animated series ‘Love, Death & Robots.’ He recently directed ‘The Killer,’ and it came out on Netflix last November.
‘Squid Game’ became a massive hit when it was released in 2021 and is still Netflix’s most-watched series. The platform has been looking to expand the ‘Squid Game’ universe since then. There’s already an unscripted series named ‘Squid Game: The Challenge.’ It’s been renewed for a second season.
‘Season 2’ of ‘Squid Game’ is set to premiere on December 26, 2024. Netflix also confirmed that there will be a third and final season of the original ‘Squid Game.’
Netflix hasn’t made an official comment on the new English-language series.
