The ‘Black Panther’ director, Ryan Coogler, announced he would reboot ‘The X-Files’ in early 2023. David Duchovny shared his thoughts on the new project in a recent chat with Screen Rant:
“I don’t really have any thoughts on it. It seems to be a whole separate project. I wish them luck.”
Duchovny played FBI Agent Fox Mulder opposite Gillian Anderson from the Fox series’ beginning in 1993 to its end.
The Creator Gave His Blessing
As of now, there have been no announcements about the cast or release date for the reboot. But it’s confirmed that the original ‘X-Files’ creator, Chris Carter, will not be involved in it. Carter said earlier this year:
“I wouldn’t [be involved]. Only as a cheerleader. They don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney own the show. They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.”
He credited Duchovny and Anderson’s dynamic for the sci-fi drama’s success.
Lead Actress Wants To Return
Meanwhile, Gillian Anderson showed interest in joining the reboot in some way. The Dana Scully actress told ‘TODAY’ in April:
“It’s so funny because, for most of my life, since I finished ‘The X-Files,’ every interview I do, people have asked, and the answer has always been, ‘Nope. Not gonna happen.’ Now, Ryan Coogler, who’s the director of ‘Black Panther,’ a brilliant, brilliant director, has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it. I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen, I think he’s a bit of a genius.”
She said of possibly coming back to the show:
“There’s a chance it will happen. Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing, but in his hands… But I am not saying no, because I think he’s really cool, and I think if he did it, it will be done incredibly well, and maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’ somethin’.”
Duchovny Won’t Come Back Without The Original Team
David Duchovny didn’t confirm whether he’ll reprise his role in the remake nor did he mention the possibility. But he previously made it clear that he would only return if Anderson and Carter were involved. He shared in a 2022 interview with ComicBook.com:
“For me, it was always, ‘There’s no show unless it’s Chris and Gillian,’ so I don’t know. I don’t want to have to think about that, because it’s not something that I necessarily need in my life…Personally, for me, the ‘X-Files’ that I’m involved in consists of Chris Carter, myself, and Gillian, so I haven’t spent time trying to think about a different version of that, and I don’t know that I will.”
‘The X-Files’ aired its finale in March 2018 after 11 seasons and 2 films.
