Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa is welcoming a new face aboard the TARDIS.
‘Andor’s Varada Sethu is confirmed as the Doctor’s second companion. She is joining Millie Gibson, who continues her role as Ruby Sunday.
Fans spotted her in photos from the set earlier. There were rumors about her joining the show at that time, but the news was confirmed recently. It was first thought that Sethu would replace Gibson, but it is now clear that both will travel with the Doctor. The actress shared the following statement after the news:
“I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honor to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole ‘Doctor Who’ family — because that is what they are — for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home. I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with. This is SO much fun!”
Showrunner Russell T Davies praised Sethu highly. He talked about his previous work with her and his happiness about having her on the ‘Doctor Who’ team:
“I first worked with Varada on a BBC production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS. Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie, and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three because the stakes are higher than ever!”
Sethu will make her first appearance in Season 2 of ‘Doctor Who.’
Millie Gibson Was to Leave ‘Doctor Who’
Millie Gibson appeared to be leaving the show, but she later made some confusing comments about her future in ‘Doctor Who:’
“Any of the era episodes are always pretty iconic, aren’t they? It’s good because it’s usually only the companions that get new costumes, but that season, the Doctor changes his outfit as well. I’m always blown away by the make-up team and the costume team; they’re so good. I love Ruby’s season two look as well. I’m so lucky.”
It seems she’s now confirmed to stay on.
Davies, Gatwa, and Gibson are currently working together on the new episodes. Davies suggests the new season will be thrilling because the stories they are creating are bigger than ever.
‘Doctor Who’ Season 1 premieres in the U.S. and around the world on Disney+ on May 10. Episodes will air weekly. U.K. fans will start watching the next day, May 11, on BBC iPlayer and BBC One. Season 2 is set to premiere in 2025.
