‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ hit theaters on July 26 and shattered box office records by earning $395.6 million in the first two weeks. The film, which is expected to reach $1 billion soon, featured appearances from many Marvel actors.
Chris Evans joined Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Emma Corrin as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in some scenes. However, his appearance didn’t last long because Corrin’s Cassandra Nova killed him a few minutes in. The actor talked about the moment in a recent chat with GQ, saying:
“[I felt] absoooolutely mad. I felt so bad when we were in the screening the other day. Since we watched it after the New York premiere with all these Lincoln Center full of fans, and everyone was so excited when they saw [Evans] appear on screen, and then after three minutes, I’ve killed him. I felt terrible. I was hiding in my seat. Yeah, it was weird. Not something I thought I’d be doing if you’d asked me a few years ago.”
Reynolds Says Cassandra Brought ‘Danger’ And ‘Mischief’
Director Shawn Levy saw Corrin in a 2022 stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s ‘Orlando’ and asked them to join the cast afterwards. The actor knew little about the MCU at that point but said they were ‘excited’ about playing a villain.
Their co-star, Ryan Reynolds, noted about their performance in the film during a Harper’s Bazaar interview in May:
“Emma brought a Gene Wilder energy to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Mischief, danger, unpredictability—from their first scene onward, we understand the villain enough to know why she’s motivated to oppose our heroes. And that’s because Emma is so fucking excellent at humanizing even the most chaotic lines. The only thing we love more than hating a villain is loving one. And we love Emma’s Cassandra Nova from the jump.”
He added:
“Emma has an ability to so subtly change—to turn on a dime. There was an effortlessness, a sense of danger.”
Evans Was Happy To Rejoin The Marvel Team
Cassandra killed Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm by deskinning him with her telekinetic powers in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Despite his quick end, Evans celebrated his return in a social media post following the film’s release.
The actor also mentioned being ‘so excited’ to reprise his role from ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ in a chat with Entertainment Weekly:
“Ryan’s a buddy. He just shot me a text saying, ‘Listen, might be a long shot, but would you have any interest in reprising something from 20 years ago?’ I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course.’”
He explained:
“Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch. His self-awareness makes him almost invincible. He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke, so if you’re going to revisit a character and you have to find a way to make it work, Ryan’s humor makes just about everything work, so you feel an automatic sense of safety.”
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is currently playing in theaters.
