‘Harry Potter’ TV Show Is Determined To Have An ‘Inclusive And Diverse’ Casting

HBO’s new ‘Harry Potter’ TV series is searching for young actors to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

HBO’s new ‘Harry Potter’ TV series is taking steps to ensure that its cast will be inclusive and diverse.

On September 9, HBO and Warner Bros. announced an open casting call for three major roles — Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The casting is for kids between the ages of 9 and 11 and will need to be residents of the UK or Ireland by April 2025.

In a casting notice shared on Cast It Talent, HBO stated that performers from all backgrounds are welcome to apply. “We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,” they wrote. “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”

Young actors must submit two short videos to audition. One is a 30-second reading of a poem or story, not from the ‘Harry Potter’ books. The other is a 60-second introduction where the actor talks about themselves, including where they live, their height, date of birth, and someone they are close to, like a family member, friend, or pet.

The ‘Harry Potter’ series is expected to air on HBO and stream on Max in 2026. The show will be a faithful adaptation of the original book series introducing a new cast to lead the roles. Francesca Gardiner, who has won two Emmys, will write and oversee the show, while Mark Mylod will direct several episodes.
