‘It’s Straight-Washing’: X-Men ’97 Showrunner Defends Morph-Wolverine Romance

DeMayo said it was always part of the story and that denying it is like ‘straight-washing.’

Former ‘X-Men ’97’ showrunner Beau DeMayo says Morph’s love for Wolverine was always part of the plan, and denying this fact is like ‘straight-washing.’

DeMayo stated that Morph’s confession to Logan was always meant to be romantic. He tweeted that suggesting otherwise and going against the intention of a queer writer-showrunner, is offensive and considered straight-washing:

“From the story bible to the script, Morph’s confession to Logan was always romantic. I discussed this openly and often during production. Suggesting otherwise, never mind contradicting the intention of a queer writer-showrunner, is both offensive and straight-washing. To talk about representation and it mattering, and then contradict a gay black creator once they are able to become one of the few showrunners who are gay and black, is just disingenuous.”

He Confirmed The Relationship Not Long Ago

DeMayo revealed last month that Morph has romantic feelings for Wolverine. This was hinted at earlier in the season during a shower scene. DeMayo explained that these feelings are one-sided. The final episode showed Morph changing into Jean Grey and telling Logan (Wolverine) that they love him. What seemed like a comforting moment was actually a declaration of love.

DeMayo will not return for the second and third seasons of ‘X-Men ’97.’ He left Marvel Studios, though the reasons are unclear.

‘X-Men ’97’ is available to stream on Disney+.
