As reported by Variety, Jim Carrey is set to make a comeback as Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik in the upcoming ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ despite his previous statements on retirement from acting.
Carrey had hinted at stepping away from the film industry in April 2022, citing a fulfilled career and personal satisfaction as a reason. Yet, the ‘Sonic’ franchise and Dr. Robotnik have drawn him back into the fold.
A post-credits scene had already left the door open for Carey’s return, but his retirement announcement had left this possibility on air. However, as per Variety, this announcement comes directly from sources close to the production.
Everything to Know About ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’
Filming for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has already taken place across various locations, including Surrey, England, London, Los Angeles, Japan, and Norway, featuring both animated characters and physical actors. The film promises to deliver the same blend of action, adventure, and comedy that fans have come to expect, with James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba reprising their roles alongside Carrey.
In addition to Carrey’s return, the film will introduce new faces to the franchise, with Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone joining the cast in undisclosed roles. This signals Paramount’s possible expansion of the ‘Sonic’ universe, which also includes a spin-off series, ‘Knuckles,‘ set to premiere on Paramount+.
Following Carrey’s announcement, producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher stated that they would try developing scripts good enough for him to continue the role. Despite his initial statements on retirement, it appears that the combination of a good script and the chance to revisit Dr. Robotnik were enough to persuade Carrey.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ is slated for release on December 20, 2024.
