Disney let go of Johnny Depp from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise after his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of physical and sexual abuse. Depp won the defamation case against Heard in 2022 but made it clear that he would turn down any offers to reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
But the latest word from producer Jerry Bruckheimer hinted at talks to bring the actor back for ‘Pirates 6.’ He told Entertainment Tonight:
“If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp. He’s a great actor and good friend… I’ve certainly spoken to him, but we’ll see what happens.”
Rumors About Captain Jack Sparrow’s Return
Disney announced a new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film following Johnny Depp’s last appearance in 2017’s ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales.’ The company later revealed that the plan was to reboot the franchise with a female-led cast.
Latest rumors pointed to Ayo Edebiri as a frontrunner to play a female pirate inspired by Anne Bonny. Meanwhile, news from Daniel Richtman said Depp was set to join her in a supporting role. ScreenTime quoted Richtman in March:
“Disney is reportedly considering bringing back Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow for ‘PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 6,’ but it would be for a supporting role.”
The Cast Will Be Completely Renewed
Recently, news claimed that the upcoming film wouldn’t include any familiar faces. Bruckheimer previously talked about ‘Top Gun 3’ with ComicBook and explained:
“You just don’t know. With ‘Top Gun’ you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does ‘Top Gun,’ I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
Austin Butler is one of the actors Disney is interested in, according to The DisInsider. Butler is also a possible choice for the live-action ‘Hercules,’ but it’s not confirmed whether he received any official offers.
