Joseph Gordon-Levitt Debunks All Rumors On Fourth ‘Dark Knight’ And Robin Spinoff

A fourth ‘Dark Knight’ film or a ‘Robin’ spinoff are off the table.

In Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, there’s no Bat Family, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt played Detective John Blake. He was revealed to be ‘Robin’ and Batman’s successor at the end of ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ This surprise made many fans think there would be more spin-offs or sequels. The actor said in a new interview with Inverse:

“Nolan was making a trilogy. He never wanted to make any more movies. This was an ending to his trilogy. It’s funny, we look back on it now with the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel. But back in those olden days, doing a trilogy was a lot, and that was how it was thought of.”

Christian Bale Would Want To Play In A Sequel

In 2022, Christian Bale told Screen Rant he would play Batman again in a new ‘Dark Knight’ sequel, but only if director Christopher Nolan asked him. Bale also knew from the start that the ‘Dark Knight’ movies were meant to be a self-contained trilogy. The actor said:

“I had a pact with Chris Nolan. We said, ‘Hey, look. Let’s make three films, if we’re lucky enough to get to do that. And then let’s walk away. Let’s not linger too long.’ In my mind, it would be something if Chris Nolan ever said to himself, ‘You know what, I’ve got another story to tell.’ And if he wished to tell that story with me, I’d be in.”

Christopher Nolan Thinks They Finished At The Right Time

Nolan moved on from superhero movies after ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ His career grew with other films like ‘Interstellar,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘Tenet,’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ He disagrees with the modern superhero movie style and wouldn’t want his Batman films to follow that approach. In 2020, he told IndieWire:

“When we did ‘Batman Begins,’ we didn’t know we’d do one and it took three years to do it and then four years before the next one. We had the luxury of time. It didn’t feel like a machine, an engine of commerce for the studio. As the genre becomes so successful, those pressures become greater and greater. It was the right time.”

On the other hand, Christopher’s brother and co-writer of ‘The Dark Knight,’ Jonathan Nolan has shown interest in a sequel. He said he would love to work on it again. Both Jonathan Nolan and Christian Bale are open to the idea of a follow-up. The decision is now up to Christopher if he wants to work with Warner Bros. on a sequel.
