Mark Ruffalo Wanted Hulk To Have Standalone Movie But MCU Said ‘No’

Ruffalo’s comments on the Marvel Studios’ approach to Hulk may disappoint some fans waiting for a standalone film for the character.

In a recent interview at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Mark Ruffalo shed some light on the future of Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fresh off his Hollywood Walk of Fame induction, Ruffalo shared a chat he had with Marvel’s Kevin Feige about the idea of a standalone Hulk film.

According to the actor, Feige has never seen a solo movie for Hulk as part of the plan. He shared:

“Yeah. Kevin [Feige] was like, ‘What would you like to do?’ And he said, ‘What would you do if you had a standalone Hulk movie?’ I said, ‘Well, I’d like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character.’ And he’s like, ‘Okay. We’ll do that over the course of four movies. We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk… Don’t mean to burst your bubble, but that’s just not going to [happen]… So, we’ll do it over four movies, how does that sound?’”

This detail put to rest the swirling rumors about a potential ‘World War Hulk’ film or anything similar in the pipeline. Ruffalo hinted that there’s no change in the initial plan:

“As far as I know. I can talk more about it, but I’ve been told not to.”

Will The Character Come Back With Another Project?

Despite this, it seems Hulk will continue to play a significant role in the MCU. There’s speculation that Ruffalo’s Hulk will return in ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ following his appearance in Disney+’s ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.’

After confirming his appearance in the upcoming Captain America film, Ruffalo was asked:

“Are you allowed to talk about that?”

To which he replied:

“Yeah, it’s going to be great.”

Meanwhile, Variety reported that the actor might have misspoken about his involvement in ‘Brave New World,’ suggesting he meant the 2025 film is part of Marvel’s next lineup, not necessarily that he’s in it.
