Marvel’s latest big-budget films, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘The Marvels,’ failed at the box office last year. Co-president Louis D’Esposito admitted that the failure was the result of ‘too many’ projects and explained the studio’s new strategy to Empire:
“It’s been a rough time. If we just stayed on top, that would have been the worst thing that could have happened to us. We took a little hit, we’re coming back strong. Maybe when you do too much, you dilute yourself a little bit. We’re not going to do that anymore. We learned our lesson. Maybe two to three films a year and one or two shows, as opposed to doing four films and four shows.”
‘A Couple Of Good Films’ Are On The Horizon
Disney CEO Bob Iger echoed the same thoughts during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday. He also discussed the upcoming Marvel films for 2025 and shared:
“[We have] a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more ‘Avengers,’ which we’re extremely excited about. Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second
Marvel’s Release Schedule Is Full
The studio has four films on the 2025 calendar: ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ ‘Thunderbolts,’ ‘The Fantastic Four,’ and ‘Blade.’ Another set including the fifth ‘Avengers’ will follow in 2026.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be Marvel’s only 2024 theatrical release. The film will hit the screen on July 26. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will return as the title characters.
