In a recent Facebook post, the director of the original ‘The Crow,’ Alex Proyas made fun of the remake’s weak box office.
“I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems,” Proyas wrote in his post on August 25.
He posted his own updates and shared YouTube reviews of the film, like one titled ‘The Crow – The Worst Movie Of The Year.’ He added, “The review we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a bit like flogging a dead horse now so I think I’ll stop after this… until another funny one comes along!”
Proyas said in another post, “Maybe they can lend their DCPs [Digital Cinema Package] to film schools for classes on how NOT to make a movie? The theatres sure won’t need ’em after next weekend.”
This isn’t the first time Proyas has criticized the new film. After the remake’s trailer came out in March, he wrote a Facebook post that has since been deleted.
He wrote in his post, “I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker’s work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So, it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fans’ response speaks volumes.”
His comments followed the negative reactions to the remake’s first trailer. He shared an article from Comic Book Resources about the backlash. The director also mentioned the lead actor, who died from a gun malfunction on set, saying, “‘The Crow’ is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”
The new ‘The Crow’ stars Bill Skarsgård in the lead role. The cast also includes FKA twigs, Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. Rupert Sanders is directing, and the script is by Zach Baylin and William Schneider. The film arrived in the United States on August 23.
