Jeremy Allen White talked about ‘The Bear’ with Collider a day before its new season’s release. He addressed the fans’ expectation of a romance between his character, Carmy, and Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney.
The actor made it clear that a love story was never the plan:
“Truly, it’s not even that we’re not on board with it. It was never, ever discussed by our writers, by Chris [Storer] or by me and Ayo. It’s something that happened entirely outside our experience and the show’s experience. It’s wild. It’s not something that we considered, and then we were like, ‘No, let’s not do that.’ It was just never happening or going to happen.”
Carmy And Sydney’s Current Relationship
‘The Bear’ hasn’t suggested any romantic relationship between Carmy and Sydney, though they had good chemistry as colleagues. It seems the two won’t be anything more than that in the future, either.
This season, Carmy and Sydney will be business partners. Ayo Edebiri says the new dynamic will be ‘more chaotic’ than expected. She told Vanity Fair:
“Carmy is somebody that I think she’s really looked up to, but now is sort of in the thick of doing business with, and it’s, I think, a lot more chaotic than she might have idealized before they really started working together.”
Both Leads Are Against The Romance
Edebiri made her directorial debut in ‘The Bear’ Season 3. She herself dismissed the idea of a romance between her and White’s characters right after Season 1. The actress explained to TVLine:
“I don’t want to rain on anybody’s parade, but I don’t think so. I don’t think so. And Jeremy has said this, too.”
White hoped no love story would be explored in the show for ‘Sydney’s sake,’ according to an interview in earlier weeks. His words to W Magazine in 2022 read:
“I just love their relationship [as it is]: the amount of respect they have for one another, and that they have a shared history, even if it’s not together.”
