The Lazarus Project Canceled After 2 Seasons: The Cliffhanger Ending Won’t Be Resolved

The network recently confirmed that the sci-fi show will not see a third season.

Sky decided against renewing ‘The Lazarus Project’ despite positive reviews and a BAFTA TV nomination for Paapa Essiedu’s performance as George. A spokesperson shared the news with Digital Spy:

“‘The Lazarus Project’ has brought audiences jaw-dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this BAFTA-winning series. Whilst we won’t be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible.”

The show was Sky Max’s second biggest new scripted launch since its premiere in 2022. It boasted a 28-day audience reach of 1.7 million.

The Ending Will Stay Unresolved

‘The Lazarus Project’ ended on a cliffhanger. The final episode showed Charly Clive’s Sarah telling George that she’s been waiting for him and suggested that she took over the Lazarus project. The ending also left Shiv, Wes, and Rebrov’s fate uncertain.

Paapa Essiedu reflected on the series’ finale in a 2023 interview and noted:

“Season 2 makes an invitation for the story to continue. Because the journey that we go in the second series is just as wild and unexpected and twist as the first series.”

But the recent cancellation left all questions unanswered.

‘The Lazarus Project’ Writer Moves On

The sci-fi show’s creator, Joe Barton, reacted to the news on X. He posted some sad face, praying hands emojis, and a Dr Seuss quote that read:

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Barton has another project with Sky on the horizon. The ‘Amadeus’ show will follow Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart after his arrival in Vienna and star Will Sharpe.
