Director Doug Liman recently gave an update on the ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel. When asked by Empire if the new project was dead, he explained:
“No, we keep talking about it. We love that world. Tom [Cruise] and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’”
The Cast Wants To Make A Sequel
Liman directed a script based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel ‘All You Need Is Kill’ for the 2014 original. The film made $370 million worldwide and the cast showed interest in a sequel since then. Emily Blunt said of the possibility in a February chat with Josh Horowitz:
“It could be good. I think when we first talked about a sequel, it was right before I was about to do ‘Mary Poppins,’ so it was quite a while ago. I think if we were going to do one, we would have to reimagine what the sequel would look like.”
Blunt Received An Early Script For The Project
Warner Bros. announced plans for ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ in 2019, and Blunt mentioned last year that she had read an early draft of the script. The actress told Horowitz:
“Yes, we did. There was one that Doug slithered over to me. But I would love to make it a reality; I just don’t know when or how. And how many ‘Mission: Impossible’s does he need? Come back to the side where you can … Wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Incredible.”
The Production Won’t Start Until Tom Cruise Is Free
Tom Cruise is busy with other projects at the moment. He’s working on ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ and his first projects at Warner Bros. Pictures with Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
The actor’s new deal with WB includes an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel, but the project is waiting for his schedule to clear up to move forward.
