The ‘Smallville’ lead actor talked about the show’s possible return when he recently joined Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum’s ‘Inside Of You’ podcast. When his former co-star asked whether he’d like to do a ‘Smallville’ movie, Tom Welling said:
“I mean, I’d be, ‘Yes, let’s hear it.’ I don’t know how it would happen.”
The 46-year-old shared that he was open to playing the role again in a project related to his ten-season show:
“Of course! I mean, listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our ‘Talk Ville Podcast,’ we were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television, like Top 50.”
Despite this, he didn’t get any offers to do so, as he noted:
“From that show, I’ve never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work. I don’t mean to, I’m not saying like I don’t feel bad about that, I don’t harp on anybody about that. But you would think that when you’re successful, you would be continued successful with successful people. But I think the time has changed.”
The Actor Has Plans To Bring The Show Back
Although there’s no news about ‘Smallville’ returning in a live-action form, Welling and Rosenbaum have been working on an animated version. The Superman actor discussed this at the Fan Expo Vancouver in 2022 with Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane, saying he wanted to reunite the original cast:
“We’re working on an animated series that picks up right after our ‘Smallville’ [Season 10], and, again, telling our own story, and our vision is that we get Erica… it might be tough to get Allison [Mack]… But even Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor is going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it; we’ve already been into this.”
With details on the animated show’s production, he went on:
“We’ve already gotten animation; we just don’t have the stories yet because Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies. As soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’ voice, that’s going to be the fun of it. I think there’s a story that Al and Miles are going to tell that’s individual and new and call it a Multiverse thing. But let’s see where it goes, and it’ll be fun.”
Durance later updated fans that the animated project was still in the works, but no recent news or release date has been announced.
There Are Other Superman Stories In The Works
In other news, the DC universe is expanding with new Superman projects. James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy,’ starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, is set for release on July 11, 2025. The film will kickstart a new phase for the DC Studios as Gunn and Peter Safran are working on rebooting it.
Another Superman project, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams, is also on the horizon. This project has been in development since 2021, but there’s no release date yet.
