Zombie Sequel ’28 Years Later’ Is Officially Confirmed And Cillian Murphy Is On Board

The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news about a new zombie film with the Oscar-nominated actor and shared some details.

Sony has won the rights to ‘28 Years Later,’ the latest addition to the zombie thriller genre, building on the 2002 hit ‘28 Days Later.’ This new project will bring back the original team, with Danny Boyle in the director’s and Alex Garland in the writer’s seat.

‘Oppenheimer’ star Cillian Murphy will get involved with ‘28 Years Later’ as an executive producer. There’s also talk of him reprising his role as Jim, the survivor from the original movie. But the project is still in its early days, and the full cast list hasn’t been finalized yet.

The Original Films Were Success

‘28 Days Later’ stood out for giving the zombie movie genre a fresh twist. It featured Murphy as a courier who wakes up to a world invaded by zombies after a virus outbreak.

The movie was a hit, earning over $82 million worldwide and leading to a sequel, ‘28 Weeks Later,’ where Boyle and Garland were executive producers.

A New Trilogy Is Coming Soon

For ‘28 Years Later,’ Boyle is on board to direct what’s being planned as the start of a new trilogy, with Garland writing the scripts. This setup suggests a long-term investment in the story and its world.

The upcoming project will follow the director’s latest miniseries, ‘Pistol,’ and the writer’s new action film, ‘Civil War,’ set for release on April 12. Its budget will be around $75 million.

In addition to Boyle, Garland, and Murphy, ‘28 Years Later’ will feature Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice as producers.
