Giancarlo Esposito On ‘Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring’s Sexual Orientation: ‘What Does Being Straight Really Mean?’

He also suggested to watch the show carefully to find hidden clues about it.

During a recent panel at MegaCon in Orlando, hosted by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Giancarlo Esposito discussed Fring’s sexuality, hinting at the character’s possible bisexual orientation.

Esposito shed light on one of the most asked questions about his character: the nature of Gus Fring’s sexual orientation. Suggesting that attentive viewers might get clues about it, Esposito revealed his thoughts on Gus’ sexuality:

“There were a couple of hints in either direction. What does being straight really mean? If you remember back when I was cooking for [Walter White], I was cooking dinner, there was a shot of a wall and, in fact, my children were on that wall in those photographs, which kind of insinuated that maybe he had a family, maybe he was married. So maybe… it went both ways. But there is a clue, and you have to look for it.”

Besides, Esposito also pointed to Fring’s relationship with Max Arsiniega as a potential indicator, alongside scenes that subtly reference Fring’s personal life.

Esposito Wants a ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off

In related news, as ‘Breaking Bad’ celebrates its sixteenth anniversary, discussions about the franchise’s future have emerged. Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White, advocated for closure by pointing out the series’ complete narrative arc. Vince Gilligan agreed, expressing a desire to avoid overstaying the franchise’s welcome.

Contrasting with Cranston and Gilligan’s reflections, Esposito has expressed interest in exploring deeper into Gus Fring’s backstory. He floated the idea of ‘The Rise of Gus,’ a project that would explore Fring’s origins and rise to power.

As discussions about the future of the ‘Breaking Bad’ universe continue, the series and its spin-off, ‘Better Call Saul,’ remain available for streaming on Netflix.
