Sean Gunn On His Plans To Take Over James Gunn’s Role In ‘The Guardians Of The Galaxy’

James Gunn announced that ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ would be his last film for the franchise.

At the recent Saturn Awards, Sean Gunn, playing Kraglin in ‘The Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series, shed light on the uncertain future of the beloved MCU franchise.

Screen Rant caught up with the actor, who revealed that despite not ruling out the possibility of a comeback, he remains in the dark about the Guardians’ next adventure:

“I honestly have no idea to tell you the truth. I think that there’s always things going on in the kitchen at Marvel, where they’re kind of figuring out the near future and the far future, and if I told you I knew what the Guardians were doing next, I’d be lying. I don’t know.”

On the topic of stepping into the directorial shoes of his brother James Gunn, who helmed the trilogy, Gunn said:

“I don’t really think I’m cut out for that job the way my brother is. I don’t think that’s quite the right job for me, but you never know.”

The Guardians’ Unknown Fate

Having moved on from the MCU, James Gunn is currently co-heading the new DCU Reboot alongside Peter Safran. His involvement in DC projects includes a new Superman origin story set for release in 2025 and a second season for ‘Peacemaker.’ Marvel Studios seems in no rush to fill the director’s void.

Combined with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, delays, and production issues, The Multiverse Saga has left the studio sailing through uncertain waters. Strikes from the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA and varying responses to recent MCU releases have shifted Marvel’s schedule.

The last installment of the Guardians series saw the superhero team disband, with a deleted ending hinting at the High Evolutionary’s return as a major MCU antagonist. Although the door is open for the group’s return, the storyline surrounding Kang, the established threat of the Multiverse Saga, faces uncertainty following the legal issues surrounding Jonathan Majors.
