In a recent appearance at FanExpo Vancouver 2024, Cameron Monaghan, who appears as the Jedi fugitive Cal Kestis in the ‘Star Wars Jedi’ video game series, revealed a clear condition for reprising his character in a live-action format.
Speaking to The Direct during the event, Monaghan implied the narrative is of more importance than a mere appearance for Cal Kestis:
“It would have to be right. By that, I mean it has to continue the story or the character in some way. I don’t want him to just kind of show up to stand around and be there. I want him to mean something and for there to be significance for the character itself. So, it would have to make sense. But in the right context, then, yeah, absolutely.”
So, the actor says he would be down for the role if it’s meaningful and contributes to the Kestis’ narrative.
Current Status of Disney+’s Star Wars Shows
Monaghan’s statements come during a series of issues faced by recent Star Wars shows on Disney+. Despite early successes like the first season of ‘The Mandalorian,’ follow-up projects such as ‘The Mandalorian Season 4,’ ‘Rangers of the New Republic,’ and ‘Ahsoka’ have not met with the same level of acclaim. This has led to cancellations, retools, and criticism.
Speculation around Monaghan’s Cal Kestis making a live-action appearance has been a topic of discussion, especially given the character’s popularity and the critical acclaim of the video games. Potential cameo opportunities would probably be in projects like ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and ‘Andor Season 2,’ although nothing has materialized so far.
With the release of ‘Jedi: Survivor‘ and talk of a third game in the series, the future of Cal Kestis’s story remains open. Monaghan’s commitment to the character suggests that any move to bring Kestis into live-action would not be taken lightly, both by him and potentially by Lucasfilm.
