Stellan Skarsgård Believes ‘Andor’ Is ‘Star Wars For Grownups’

‘Andor’ is not just any ‘Star Wars’ story, says actor Stellan Skarsgård. He believes the series, written for grown-ups, explores dark and complex ideas.

In a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård commented on his role in the Disney+ series ‘Andor,’ describing it as ‘Star Wars for grownups.’

Skarsgård discussed the series’ mature themes, character depth, and its reflection on societal structures. According to the actor, the series explored the oppressive and fascist nature of its setting. This complexity, Skarsgård suggested, appeals to an adult audience:

“First of all, it was very well written. It was Tony Gilroy who wrote it. It’s like Star Wars for grownups. It’s a very oppressive society, it’s a fascist society and you feel the presence of it. The characters are very well drawn.”

During the interview, Skarsgård also talked about his character, Luthen Rael. He shared the challenges of delivering the monologue that shows the character’s sacrifices for the cause. As it turns out, his dedication to perfection led Skarsgård to perform the speech multiple times:

“I did it 10 times because it wasn’t good. I mean, not exactly, but if you know that something is wrong… Ah, you know it’s wrong, you know it’s wrong, you know… Ah! It’s not wrong.”

Moreover, Skarsgård admitted that Luthen Rael is a character his 10-year-old self would love to play:

“Finally, I got a script that was like a character that I wanted to play as a 10-year-old. And then, of course, who doesn’t want to fly a ship? A spaceship? Who doesn’t want to shoot with ray guns? I mean, it’s the little boy in me.”

Is There Going to be an Andor Season 2?

The production of ‘Andor’ had its challenges, including delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. Despite these, the series wrapped filming for its second season in February 2024. The upcoming season, expected to be released in 2025, will conclude the series and bridge the narrative to ‘Rogue One.’

‘Andor’ received critical acclaim since its debut, praised for offering the ‘most complex, mature story in Star Wars lore.’ The series follows the journey of Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, from thief to rebel spy, setting the stage for the events leading up to ‘Rogue One’ and the original 1977 Star Wars film.

In addition to Luna, the series has a cast featuring Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, and others. Filming locations spanned across the United Kingdom, with principal photography taking place at Pinewood Studios in London.
