According to a recent update from a fan on Twitter, director Sam Raimi hinted at the potential return of Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger in a new ‘Spider-Man’ film.
At the recent Monster-Mania Con in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, held from March 8-10, 2024, Raimi spoke to a fan about his keen interest in revisiting the Spider-Man universe. As per the fan’s tweet, here is what happened:
“He told me that he hadn’t talked to Tobey in about three years, and in that conversation, he expressed his happiness at seeing our Spider-Man back on the big screen. I took advantage of this moment and asked him about the long-awaited Spider-Man 4. He told me that there are chances of this happening simply because he has the same desire as we do. But if it is to happen, it will be at the right time.”

Ele me disse que há chances sim disso ocorrer pelo simples fato dele ter a mesma vontade que nós temos. Mas se for pra acontecer, será no momento certo. 4/6

Raimi Wants a Spider-Man 4 Movie With Maguire For a Long Time
This isn’t the first time Raimi expressed interest in reviving the Maguire-led Spider-Man series.
Following Maguire’s cameo as Peter Parker in the MCU’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ fans rallied under the hashtag #MakeRaimiSpiderMan4 to bring the previously scrapped project back. Raimi saw that the introduction of the multiverse, especially the crossover of different Spider-Man versions in ‘No Way Home,’ makes a fourth film possible.
Why Was ‘Spider-Man 4’ Canceled?
Plans for Spider-Man 4 began in 2007, even as the third film faced criticism. Sony went so far as recruiting writers for the fifth and sixth movies, with actors like John Malkovich, Dylan Baker, and Anne Hathaway rumored for roles in the fourth film.
Maguire was initially set to return for a fourth Spider-Man film in 2011, but Sony canceled the project in 2010.
The cancellation was partly due to Raimi’s inability to meet the planned May 2011 release date, leading to his withdrawal from the project. His dissatisfaction with the script, which saw four different iterations from various screenwriters, and studio pressure contributed to the decision.
All films in the original Spider-Man trilogy are now available on Disney+ for streaming.
