Showrunner Says Disney+ Deal Will Save ‘Doctor Who’

Russell T. Davies says the show joining Disney+ is a lifesaver.

‘Doctor Who’ is coming back with a brand new season. This time, the show will premiere on Disney+ along with its traditional home on the BBC. Why the big move? Russell T. Davies says it’s all about making sure ‘Doctor Who’ can keep going strong.

Davies recently told ‘They Like To Watch‘ podcast that the BBC alone couldn’t handle the cost of making ‘Doctor Who’ anymore. He also hinted that changes at the BBC could mean more issues for the show in the future:

“I had already said in interviews that I think ‘Doctor Who’ will have to become a co-pro; there’s no way the BBC is going to fund that. You’ve also got to look in the long term at the end of the BBC, which is somehow, surely, undoubtedly on its way in some shape or form. What is ‘Doctor Who’ going to do then? You have to prepare for that.”

What’s New For This Season?

Davies promised lots of action, with monsters and villains and a secret across time and space:

“At last, it’s my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together. Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that’s been spanning time and space for decades. Don’t miss a second!”

Ncuti Gatwa is stepping in as the Fifteenth Doctor this season. There are some familiar faces joining the cast as well. Aneurin Barnard and Jonathan Groff will appear as guests.

‘Doctor Who’s new season will hit Disney on May 10 at 7 pm ET. If you prefer watching on the BBC, you can catch it on iPlayer right after midnight on May 11 and then on BBC One later that day.
