Disney CEO Claims Nobody Knows What ‘Woke’ Really Means

He says the goal of Disney movies is to have fun and entertain, not to push certain ideas.

Disney’s Bob Iger said that nobody understands the real meaning behind ‘woke.’

Fans started saying Disney’s movies and shows were becoming too ‘woke,’ but Iger has something to say about that. If you’re scratching your head wondering what ‘woke’ means, you’re not alone. Iger believes that a lot of people use the word ‘woke’ without really understanding it:

“I think the term ‘woke’ is thrown around rather liberally. No pun intended. I think a lot of people don’t even understand really what it means. The bottom line is that infusing messaging as a sort of a number one priority in our films and TV shows is not what we’re up to.”

He said Disney’s main job is to make movies and shows that are fun to watch. Sure, it would be great if Disney could also make the world a better place by showing different kinds of people getting along, but the most important thing is that their movies and shows are entertaining:

“They need to be entertaining. And where the Disney company can have a positive impact on the world, whether it’s, you know, fostering acceptance and understanding of people of all different types great. But, generally speaking, we need to be entertainment for an entertainment first company, and I’ve worked really hard to do that.”

Iger also talked about how Disney tries to make stories that reflect everyone in the audience. But he knows it’s hard to make everyone happy all the time.

You can watch the CNBC interview with Iger below.

Nelson Peltz Was Determined To Save Disney

Peltz wanted to be more involved in Disney’s decisions. He thinks some Disney movies are too focused on giving messages. Peltz also said he doesn’t understand why movies like ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Black Panther’ are necessary.

Bob Iger fought off Peltz’s attempt to join Disney’s board of directors. This means Peltz won’t be making big decisions for Disney. Iger said he was fighting for the company, not just for himself:

“I was supporting the interests of the company, not my personal interests, and defending what the company and the board were doing, as opposed to defending myself.”

Peltz claimed ‘The Marvels’ didn’t do well for the same reason. But Disney and some fans don’t agree with him. They think his ideas are exactly why he shouldn’t be making creative decisions for Disney. Some people online say that if a story is about all women or all Black heroes, then it should be told that way.
