Doctor Who Star Says His Casting Makes ‘Perfect Sense’ In The Story

He explains that his casting as the first queer Black Doctor makes sense because the show celebrates change and diversity.

Ncuti Gatwa is the first openly queer Black actor as the Doctor, and he says this fits perfectly with the story.

Russell T Davies and Gatwa both feel that the Doctor being different, like being queer or Black, makes sense because the Doctor is an alien and the show is all about change and new perspectives. They believe true fans will understand and appreciate this. As per Variety, Gatwa says:

“Do you know what? It makes perfect sense to me. I feel like anyone that has a problem with someone who’s not a straight white man playing this character, you’re not really, truly a fan of the show. You’ve not been watching! Because the show is about regeneration, and the Doctor is an alien — why would they only choose to be this sort of person?”

Davies adds:

“They weren’t exactly the straightest men in the past. You’re talking about someone who does have a lightness and a joy about him that, to me, chimes with queer energy. It’s very rarely driving the story vehemently, but you will see moments exploring it. We’re not delivering a neutered Doctor.”

Gatwa Had a Unique Introduction in the Show

Gatwa’s introduction happened in a funny twist during the 60th-anniversary episode. David Tennant’s Doctor splits in half, and Gatwa’s Doctor appears. Gatwa says he found this scene both shocking and hilarious:

“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting! I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and they were like [he claps his hands as if to say ‘Voilà!’]”

Russell T Davies returns to the show as the leader and writer. He’s excited about Gatwa’s role as well.

‘Doctor Who’ is now partnering with Disney+ to reach more viewers. The new episodes will start on May 10 on Disney+ everywhere except the U.K., where it will air on May 11.
