Ncuti Gatwa Says He’s In ‘Doctor Who’ To Stay

Gatwa is not leaving ‘Doctor Who’ anytime soon.

Ncuti Gatwa says he plans to stick with ‘Doctor Who’ for quite some time.

‘Doctor Who’s first season in the new Disney+ era hasn’t started yet, but Gatwa is already thinking about the future. He told Variety that he’s ‘not going anywhere soon.’ Russell T. Davies also chimed in and said he has plans for more seasons after the first two.

He Thought He Needed To Be ‘Exceptional’

Gatwa is the first Black actor to lead ‘Doctor Who.’ He also spoke about the issues he and other Black actors had in Hollywood in a separate interview. He argued that Black actors often feel they have to be perfect in their roles to be noticed, but white actors receive praise without needing to be perfect:

“We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing. So, yeah, I think I’m just learning now like, ‘Oh, you are allowed to be loved.’ You don’t have to be excellent or aspire to that term, ‘Black excellence.’ What the hell?”

Gatwa said he wants to be appreciated for who he is, not just for his success as an actor. He then added that ‘Doctor Who’ will include race issues as well.

‘Doctor Who’ will start airing on Disney+ in the United States on May 10 and in the United Kingdom on BBC iPlayer and BBC One starting May 11. Fans can watch new episodes every Friday on Disney+ and every Saturday on BBC platforms.
