Eric Kripke talked about the reactions to ‘The Boys’s touch on political and social issues in its episodes during a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked to comment on the headlines calling the show ‘woke,’ he said:
“I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show. Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else. But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologize for what we’re doing.”
His words went on:
“Some people who watch it think Homelander is the hero. What do you say to that? The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them. So, if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands.”
Details On The Show’s Foresight Of Political/Social Issues
The interviewer also pointed out the similarity between how ‘The Boys’ and ‘Homeland’ drew parallels to real life events. So, the writer shared:
“It’s happened now almost every season, and we write them sometimes close to two years before they air and again, we’ll find that the news is accurately reflecting whatever we’re talking about. It’s not a spoiler to say that first episode [of Season 4], Homelander is on trial. A big concern is ‘Can you convict someone that powerful of a crime?’ And what does that mean for the various supporters or the people protesting him?”
The plot coincided with Donald Trump’s ongoing trial on 34 criminal charges of falsifying business records. Kripke explained:
“Did I know it was going to come out during Trump’s trial? Of course not. But we write what we’re either scared of or pissed off about. Someone asked me last year, about season three, ‘How are you so prescient with cops and over-policing in Black neighborhoods?’ Well, it’s been a problem for over 100 years. It was a problem five years ago, and, unfortunately, it’s going to be a problem five years from now. It’s always the same shit.”
There Are More Episodes To Come
‘The Boys’ Season 4 finished production in early April. New episodes are set to air on Prime Video on June 13 after the work on dubs and subtitles is done.
Meanwhile, Season 5 is confirmed. Eric Kripke revealed plans for the next season in late May through Screen Rant:
“We’re about a month into the writers’ room right now, so we have some pretty cool notions. It’s a very raw lava-esque deal right now. It hasn’t hardened into anything, but I’m excited. I think there’s some crazy shit’s been talked about, that’s for sure.”
There’s no official release date for the series’ fifth season, but it’s expected to arrive between 2025 and 2026.
