A mix-up on Rotten Tomatoes led to a 2008 movie getting negative reviews from trolls who meant to target ‘The Acolyte.’
‘The Acolyte’ has a critic score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, it appears it’s been well-received by professional reviewers. But the audience score is much lower at 15%. It’s likely due to people leaving fake reviews.
Funnily enough, some of these trolls got confused and left negative reviews for a 2008 movie named ‘Acolytes.‘ The film currently has a 75% score from 8 critics, but a 33% audience score from over 500 viewers.
Rotten Tomatoes tried to stop review-bombing in the past by requiring users to have a verified ticket purchase to leave reviews. It’s safe to say that this rule is hard to apply to TV shows.
What Made The Fans Do This?
Some Star Wars fans are unhappy with the show’s cast, which is mainly female-led. The third episode features lesbian characters and new ideas about Star Wars lore, and this caused a surge in negative reviews. The showrunner agrees it’s the ‘gayest’ ‘Star Wars’ project ever.
‘The Acolyte’ sees a Jedi Master (Lee Jung-Jae) investigate a series of crimes and face a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg).
The cast includes Stenberg, Jung-Jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss. The show is created by Leslye Headland, who also serves as the showrunner and executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King, and Jason Micallef.
The first three episodes of ‘The Acolyte’ are available on Disney+.
