Melissa Benoist Shares Sincere Advice For Next Supergirls: Don’t Ignore The Fans

Melissa Benoist explains one thing that future Supergirls should be careful about.

During a recent appearance on the Collider Ladies Night podcast, Melissa Benoist gave some advice to future Supergirls.

The actress talked about her experience playing the Supergirl for six years. She also gave advice to Milly Alcock and other Supergirl actors on what to remember during their time as the character in the DC Universe:

“I think what always drove me while working on that show was the audience and who I knew I was making the show for. Of course, I know that she is an iconic character that spans many generations of fans, but the people that I was making that show for while we were making it were young women, and if I kept that in the forefront of my mind, it always made everything palatable.”

What Did Alcock Say About Her Casting?

Milly Alcock from ‘House of the Dragon’ will play Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the DC Universe. In January, Alcock was confirmed to play DC’s Kara Zor-El. She competed for the role with actors from ‘The Winchesters,’ animated Supergirl voice Meg Donnelly, ‘Priscilla”s Cailee Spaeny, and ‘CODA”s Emilia Jones. Milly made the following statement at the time of her casting:

“So excited to be a part of the DC fam. Thank you so much to James Gunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl.”

Her Showrunner Also Celebrated The Actress

When Alcock got the role of Supergirl, Ryan Condal, the showrunner for the ‘House of the Dragon’ congratulated her. Condal told Entertainment Weekly:

“We texted back and forth, but I had heard a rumor that she was up for it in the final running. There was something else going on that I think her reps needed a letter from me or something like that for immigration. It was something very boring. So I was just texting with her to say, ‘It’s all taken care of. Let me know if you need anything else. By the way, are you Supergirl?’ And then I got back a series of emojis that totally did not answer the question, but did intrigue me.”

He continued:

“When the news actually broke that she was, I said, ‘This is incredible and I’m so proud of you.’ She’s just such a wonderful person and young actor. Sky’s the limit in front of her now. Literally the sky’s the limit because you will be flying through it. But it’s just crazy to me, and I’m so proud of her and so happy for her, and I think it’s great. I’m just hoping that she ends up filming at Leavesden [the U.K. studio where they shoot ‘House of the Dragon’] so that we can hang out on each other’s sets.”

As of now, five actors have played Supergirl in live-action roles. Helen Slater was the first in the 1984 movie ‘Supergirl.’ Laura Vandervoort took on the role in ‘Smallville,’ starting from its seventh season. Melissa Benoist portrayed Supergirl for six seasons and made guest appearances in Arrowverse shows. Sasha Calle was the most recent Supergirl, appearing in ‘The Flash’ movie in 2023.
