‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboot Scrapped At Peacock

The project was first announced in 2019, but it never received an official series order.

The long-awaited reboot of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ will no longer be happening at Peacock.

This project was first announced in 2019, but it never got an official series order and has been in development since then. The new show was supposed to be set in the same world as the 2003 ‘Battlestar Galactica’ series.

Variety reports that UCP still plans to shop the project to other outlets in hopes of finding a new home for it.

The Show Went Under Other Struggles As Well

‘Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail was going to be the executive producer through his Esmail Corp. Chad Hamilton from Esmail Corp. was also an executive producer. Michael Lesslie joined in 2020 as the writer but left the project in 2021. Derek Simonds took over as writer, executive producer, and showrunner in January.

The original ‘Battlestar Galactica’ series was created by Glen A. Larson and aired for one season in 1978 on ABC. It starred Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Lorne Greene, and Maren Jensen. This series was followed by a short-lived continuation called ‘Galactica 1980.’ The original series also inspired comic books, novels, board games, and video games.

Ronald D. Moore and the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy) rebooted ‘Battlestar Galactica’ in 2003 with a three-hour miniseries featuring Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, and Katee Sackhoff. This miniseries led to a new series that ran for four seasons and included two TV movies. A prequel series called ‘Caprica’ aired on Syfy for one season in 2010.
