Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz returned to Winter River with her husband and daughter after her father’s death in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.’ The actress recently told Slash Film that it was ‘hard to imagine’ her character, who was once a death-obsessed gothic teenager, as an adult at the early stages of the production.
Ryder said that the casting of Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux helped her figure out Lydia’s new life as a TV personality in the sequel, “I think once we got there and once Jenna and I bonded and once Justin came on board…”
“I mean, I think everyone who’s as old as I am now, we’ve all been in those things where you’re just like, ‘What was I thinking, in terms of the relationship I have?’” she explained. “But I don’t know what young Lydia, I don’t think she would ever have expected to be in front of a camera.”
Original cast members Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara also returned for the sequel along with newcomers Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Arthur Conti, and Filipe Cates. Keaton said in an earlier interview that the new movie would be better than the original.
“There’s more of a connection for the audience in terms of the other characters,” he told Total Film. “There’s things in here that I wasn’t ready for, that are beyond delightful. Instead of saying, ‘I can’t wait until this thing shows up,’ or, ‘I just want this thing called Beetlejuice to go nuts.’”
Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ will hit the big screen on September 6.
