Sebastian Stan talked about the roles he auditioned for in an interview on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. He especially wanted to play Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ films and was close to securing it, but Chris Pine was the ultimate choice.
“There were a couple of things I didn’t get that I really desperately wanted,” the actor said. “But Captain Kirk for J.J. Abrams, that was one of the first I got very close to. I remember I was really, really close, and I remember I had a screen test with [Abrams] at Paramount and my manager had me do a separate photo shoot where I would try and replicate all these William Shatner pictures just to send to him, see how much I looked like him, but I didn’t get it.”
Stan also mentioned auditioning for Hal Jordan in 2011’s ‘Green Lantern’ and recalled how seeing other candidates like Ryan Reynolds during the try-outs convinced him he wouldn’t get the part.
Reynolds landed the role in the end, and the actor said it was for the best as “I don’t know if I could have handled that level of attention like some of those guys.”
Instead, Stan found success as Marvel’s Bucky Barnes, starting with ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’ He reprised the part through several MCU projects including ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Most recently, the actor appeared in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ with Anthony Mackie. He is now set to star in the upcoming ‘Thunderbolts*,’ waiting for release on May 2, 2025.
