A rumor that Dua Lipa signed a 10-year contract to play Zatanna recently went viral online. But James Gunn put the talks to rest on Threads when a fan asked him if the news was ‘true or debunked.’
He wrote, “Until this moment, it was neither of those things, but as of now, it’s debunked as well. ‘10-year contract?’ Do they think this is the 1930s? I’m a Dua Lipa fan, but no.”
Before this, the news of a ‘Zatanna’ film sparked interest when filmmaker Emerald Fennell was tapped to write the script in 2021. But Fennell recently confirmed her version had already been set aside.
The filmmaker was working on the project as part of J.J. Abrams’s Dark Universe reboot for Warner Bros. “I did write it, but it was complicated; you know, the regimes changed; it’s the classic studio stuff,” she told the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. “J.J. is incredible, his team is incredible, and I wrote in the end a script that was reasonably demented — in a good way, I think.”
“But in the end, the whole universe got changed. And that’s fine; It was really fun to do in the end. Whether it would have been remotely makeable… that’s the thing, I was only ever slated to write it.”
DC Studios now has its hands full with several projects, including the upcoming animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ and 2025’s ‘Superman.’ Additional films and TV shows are also in development as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe lineup, though it’s uncertain if all of them will make it to the screen.
