Avengers: Doomsday Director Promises An ‘Explosive’ Return For Robert Downey Jr. As Doctor Doom

He confirmed that they already have a storyline in mind for the actor’s return to the MCU.

Robert Downey Jr. said goodbye to the MCU after Tony Stark’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ but Marvel Studios announced several months ago that he would be back, this time playing Doctor Doom in the next round of ‘Avengers’ films, directed by the Russo Brothers.

Joe Russo shared the origins of the idea for Downey’s villainous comeback during a new interview with GamesRadar+ at MCM Comic-Con 2024.

“We’re all very close,” he explained. “We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all of us – so we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story.”

The details are still under wraps, but the Multiverse is likely to play a big part in the storyline. According to Russo, something ‘really explosive’ is waiting for fans in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

The director said, “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?”

Filming for the fifth ‘Avengers’ film will begin in spring 2025. Until then, the Russo Brothers are working on their upcoming film, ‘The Electric State,’ which is set to hit Netflix on March 14, 2025.
