‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot Takes a Risky New Direction Without Sylvester Stallone

The ‘Cliffhanger’ reboot is moving forward without Sylvester Stallone.

The upcoming ‘Cliffhanger’ reboot is taking a surprising new direction, and this time, Sylvester Stallone won’t be a part of it.

Stallone starred in the original 1993 film, and he was expected to reprise his role as Gabe Walker. According to Variety, the new ‘Cliffhanger’ film went through some major changes, and Stallone left the project entirely. The reboot is now being led by director Jaume Collet-Serra, and actress Lily James will star as the new main character in the story.

The reboot is currently being filmed in Austria’s Dolomite mountains. It will feature Pierce Brosnan as Ray Cooper, a seasoned mountaineer who owns a luxury chalet in the area. Ray and his daughter Naomi (Lily James) are pulled into a life-or-death situation during a weekend trip with the son of a billionaire. They become targets of a group of kidnappers. This forces Naomi to confront her fears from a past climbing accident and fight to survive. The plot is described as a ‘father-daughter take on ‘Die Hard.”

The cast also includes Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba, and Bruno Gourey. Director Collet-Serra says capturing the intense mountain setting was a key goal for the production. The team is using large format cameras to film on location in the Dolomites. The director believes this will make the movie feel more realistic. Lily James even trained in real climbing techniques to add to the film’s authenticity.

The ‘Cliffhanger’ reboot was first announced in May 2023. ‘Angel Has Fallen’ director Ric Roman Waugh was set to direct, and Stallone was still on board to play Gabe Walker. But a change in the script and storyline led to a different approach for the reboot, and Stallone stepped away from the film.

There is no release date for the new ‘Cliffhanger,’ but filming is underway.
