Zemeckis revealed he is open to reviving the ‘Back To The Future’ franchise — by bringing ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ from the stage to the big screen.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast for his new movie Here, Zemeckis said there will never be a ‘Back To The Future 4’ or a remake/sequel of the 1985 film. But there’s a twist. “I would like to do ‘Back to the Future: The Musical,’ the director said. “Just like [Mel Brooks] did with ‘The Producers.’ I would love to do that. I think that would be great. [I] floated that out to the folks at Universal, but they don’t get it. So there’s nothing I can do.”
Zemeckis joked that Universal Studio asks him about a possible sequel ‘every six months,’ but they both know a true ‘Back to the Future 4’ is off the table.
Gale previously revealed that Universal can’t develop a sequel or remake without Zemeckis and him due to contracts — and the two are “very proud of the trilogy as it stands and we want to leave it as is,” as Gale explained in 2008.
‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ debuted in 2020, and it’s already been popular on stage. The musical is now on a North American tour set to wrap up in the summer of 2025, with plans for an opening in Japan after that.
