Warner Bros. Discovery announced a Premium Video On Demand release for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ following its failure at the box office last month. But it seems the film won’t achieve much success there, either.
The sequel to 2019’s ‘Joker’ managed to only secure the fourth spot on both the iTunes and Fandango charts so far (via ComicBook). It fell behind other 2024 productions like ‘The Substance,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.’
The financial outlook for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is grim, with expected losses reaching up to hundreds of millions. The film had a budget of around $200 million but could barely pass it in theaters.
The story and its musical elements have faced a lot of criticism from fans, especially with the ending that revealed Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck wasn’t the real Joker. The actor and director Todd Phillips defended the conclusion during the sequel’s promotion, but it still ended up as a critical and commercial failure.
Phillips also directed the 2019 original, which broke box office records as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever before ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ replaced it this year.
The ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ cast featured Lady Gaga as Lee alongside Phoenix, as well as Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz.
