‘Spaceballs 2’ is moving forward faster than we thought.
Co-writer and actor Josh Gad recently shared some exciting updates about the movie in an interview with Forbes. ‘Spaceballs 2’ was only announced a few months ago, but Gad revealed that the script is already finished, and the project is ‘nearing the end zone.’ There’s no word yet on when filming will start or when we will see it in theaters.
Gad couldn’t reveal too many details about the storyline, but he did hint that the team is hard at work bringing this sequel to life. “I can’t tell you anything beyond the process at this point, but I can tell you every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality,” he said.
The original ‘Spaceballs’ movie joked about a sequel called ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.’ When asked if this would be the official title, Gad replied with a playful ‘Watch this space!’
Josh Gad isn’t working alone on this project. He’s teamed up with writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who also wrote ‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu.’ Mel Brooks is back as a producer and seems very involved in the process. “The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career,” Gad admitted. “It was sort of a fever dream that this all happened. Mel has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away.”
The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter serving as an executive producer.
As for the cast, so far, Gad is the only confirmed actor. John Candy passed away in 1994, so Barf likely won’t return. Gad hinted that ‘Spaceballs 2’ might introduce new characters similar to how ‘Star Wars’ has changed its main characters over the years.
The original ‘Spaceballs’ is currently streaming on Prime Video.
