Esther is officially coming back in a third ‘Orphan’ movie, and Isabelle Fuhrman will once again play the iconic character.
The announcement came from Variety on Monday. It’s confirming that ‘Orphan 3’ is moving forward with Lionsgate and Dark Castle Entertainment. This will be the third film in the ‘Orphan’ series.
Director William Brent Bell and writer David Coggeshall, who both worked on ‘Orphan: First Kill,’ are returning for this new movie. Dark Castle Entertainment’s co-CEO Norman Golightly says ‘Orphan 3’ will be a movie to attract new fans. “With the past success of the first two movies and another thrilling storyline, we are confident that ‘Orphan 3’ will be a must-see movie for both current fans of the franchise, and new fans alike,” he said.
There’s not much information about the plot. The first movie showed Esther’s disturbing behavior and ended with her being killed by the woman who thought she was adopting a young girl. As the original story finished with Esther’s death, it’s unlikely that ‘Orphan 3’ will be a direct sequel. Another prequel about Esther’s past seems like a possibility, but we will have to wait for more details.
The ‘Orphan’ series was quite successful at the box office. The first ‘Orphan’ movie earned over $12 million in its North American opening weekend and grossed $78 million worldwide. ‘Orphan: First Kill’ was released in theaters and on Paramount+ at the same time in 2022 but still managed to pull in $45 million globally. So, ‘Orphan 3’ has a strong chance to perform well in theaters.
Lionsgate is presenting ‘Orphan 3’ at the American Film Market this week.
