Jeremy Renner Insists His Friendship With Avengers Co-Stars Is ‘Not Fake’

The actor confirms that their friendship is not staged for the cameras.

Jeremy Renner recently sat down for a chat with Men’s Health and opened up about the Marvel cast’s relationship. He made it clear that everything between them was real:

“Oh, f*ck yeah, it’s a real thing—it’s not just for Instagram. We [frick]in’ hate that sh*t. No, we have a family chat and have for a long time.”

The actor explained:

“When you work with people—look, we all went through a culturally significant experience together. And there’s divorces and marriages and babies; a lot of stuff happened in these 12 years. In the films, we look like we’re at a costume party, and there’s ridiculous props and we’re doing these ridiculous things, but it’s also beautiful because we’re all connected. There’s a brotherhood or sisterhood or whatever the heck you want to call it. I just call it love. I love every one of them. I’d rather go to jail with Downey than go do something amazing by myself. I’d rather get in a car crash with Evans.”

His Co-Stars Helped Him Recover

Renner had a serious snow plow accident which severely injured him and even stopped his heart last year. He previously revealed that his ‘Avengers’ castmates helped him a lot through the recovery process.

The actor especially credited Robert Downey Jr. and told People:

“We ended up having really great chats on FaceTime, like we were dating or something.”

He went on:

“He’s like, ‘Dude, the most important thing is you look good, I don’t care how you feel, as long as you look good, that’s all that matters.’ He’s like, ‘You’ve got to get back to do ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ because we need to see what happens.’ His ways are very heartwarming.”

The ‘Avengers’ Cast Was Worried About Renner

The accident took place when Jeremy Renner tried to save his nephew from a runaway snowcat. The Marvel actors went on their group chat as soon as they got the news. Chris Hemsworth recalled in a GQ interview:

“We were all on our ‘Avengers’ text chain, we were all chatting. And it was wild. None of us really knew how serious it was. I think anything like that, it’s an immediate realization of ‘Wow, any of us can go at any minute…’”

Scarlett Johansson noted in a separate chat with Variety that she was ‘so f*cking happy’ to see Renner get better. Her words read:

“I didn’t know if I was ever going to see him again … He’s a very spiritual person in general and a very soulful person. And you can see that in his work. And I just was so happy to see that he is full of life and light, and he’s also hilarious. We laughed a lot.”

The Hawkeye actor went back on set following his recovery to film ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Season 3. The show’s new episodes started streaming on Paramount+.
