Jason Momoa Explains The Most Difficult Aspect Of Playing Aquaman

As it appears, playing Aquaman isn’t that easy for Jason Momoa.

Jason Momoa recently shed light on the more challenging aspects of his Aquaman role, particularly focusing on the difficulties of getting into character.

In a candid reveal on an episode of Esquire’s ‘Explain This,’ Momoa discussed a lesser-known struggle he faces in becoming Aquaman – dealing with his sensitivity to having his eyes touched. Given the necessity of wearing special contact lenses for the role, this was something the actor struggled with every time he portrayed Aquaman.

Momoa humorously referred to his pronounced forehead as a ‘Hawaiian visor,’ saying:

“I have this Neanderthal forehead; it’s a Hawaiian visor, I like to call it. It’s very strong, and I don’t like my eyes touched — so we have to have a couple of people pry my head open to put these damn things in so I can play the character. They’ll always tell me, like, ‘You don’t need that!’ but I’m like, ‘Oh, I need it, I need it for the character!’ I just guess I’m sensitive. I have sensitive eyes.”

Momoa Got Injured On The ‘Aquaman’ Set As Well

This physical discomfort is not the only challenge the actor has faced during his time as Aquaman. Momoa revealed that he sustained an eye injury on the set of ‘Aquaman 2,’ which he described during an interview on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’ The injury was severe enough to necessitate surgery:

“I messed up my eyes and just got something in it that kinda cut it up, and then I gotta get surgery, I have a hernia, I got ribs out. I’m just getting beat up. But it’s gonna be a great movie; you’re gonna love it.”

Momoa then humorously reflected on his age, noting the toll that action roles can take on the body:

“I love my job, and I get a little too excited. And then the age thing: I’m an aging superhero right now.”

What Are Momoa’s Future Projects?

Momoa’s journey as Aquaman began in 2016 and has included major titles such as ‘Aquaman’ (2018) and its sequel ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ (2023). Momoa has not only contributed to the DC Extended Universe through his performances but also had a hand in the creative process, contributing to the writing of ‘Aquaman 2.’

Beyond the underwater kingdom, Momoa’s career is expanding into different genres and roles. He’s set to star in the upcoming American-Italian drama film ‘In the Hand of Dante‘ and is playing a leading role in the historical drama series ‘Chief of War‘ for Apple TV+.

Besides, according to the Esquire interview, fans can look forward to a Buddy Cop movie featuring Momoa alongside Dave Bautista.
