‘Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito Gets Late Andre Braugher’s Lead Role In ‘The Residence’

This change happened because Braugher, the original actor, sadly passed away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Giancarlo Esposito, who is amously known as Gus Fring in ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul,’ is set to replace the late Andre Braugher in the Netflix drama ‘The Residence.’

Following the passing of Braugher on December 11 due to lung cancer, there was a void in the upcoming Shondaland series. Braugher was originally cast as the male lead in ‘The Residence,’ which is a show set against the backdrop of a White House murder mystery. His untimely departure came after he had completed a big portion of his scenes.

After Hollywood’s dual strikes last year, filming resumed last month. As per THR, the series decided to recast Esposito, who is now reshooting scenes previously filmed by Braugher. Esposito, as the White House chief usher A.B. Wynter, will be joining a cast including Uzo Aduba, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, and Ken Marino, among others.

The series also welcomes new faces such as Al Franken, Andrew Friedman, and Julian McMahon.

What is ‘The Residence’ About?

Inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s book ‘The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House,’ ‘The Residence‘ is a fictional narrative exploring a complex murder mystery within the White House. The official Netflix logline hints at an exciting plot:

“132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. ‘The Residence’ is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

Under the creative direction of showrunner Paul William Davies, known for his work on ‘Scandal’ and ‘For the People,’ ‘The Residence’ gears up for its global launch on Netflix.

Beyond ‘The Residence,’ Esposito’s busy schedule is lined with projects like ‘The Gentlemen,’ ‘Abigail,’ and ‘Parish.’ Besides, his recent comments at MegaCon in Orlando about exploring Gus Fring’s backstory reveal he’s open to a ‘Breaking Bad’ spin-off about Gus.
