Sydney Sweeney Can’t Stop Mocking ‘Madame Web’s Failure In Box Office

The film, which premiered on February 14, has faced a rocky start, with Sweeney herself making light of the situation.

Having Sydney Sweeney as one of the leads, Julia Carpenter, ‘Madame Web’ had ambitions of drawing big audiences. Despite these hopes, the film managed to gather only about $80 million against its budget of around $100 million.

Sweeney admitted the Sony release’s shortcomings in a humorous way. On ‘Saturday Night Live,’ she playfully remarked on the film’s reception, or lack thereof.

In her SNL appearance, the actress noted her roles in ‘Anyone But You’ and ‘Euphoria’ were well-received, but humorously added that audiences ‘definitely did not see me in ‘Madame Web.’’ This comment pointed to the film’s less-than-expected box office numbers.

Marvel’s Newest Project Failed At The Box Office

To break even, ‘Madame Web’ needs to hit $200 million, a target that now seems out of reach. The film has struggled to attract viewers, making its profitability increasingly unlikely as it continues to underperform.

Critical reception has been tough, with the film garnering a low score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite a somewhat more positive response from audiences, it remains clear that ‘Madame Web’ has not met expectations, with a score of 57%.

Dakota Johnson’s casting as the titular character did not escape criticism, with some fans questioning her enthusiasm for the superhero genre following certain interviews about the Spider-Verse.

The Lead Actress Is Not Quite Happy About The Final Result

Johnson herself has given mixed signals about her involvement, initially finding the role appealing for its ‘sexy’ story and the character’s abilities, but later expressing a disinterest in watching the film for the sake of ‘self-care.’

Recently, Johnson hinted at moving away from similar roles in the future, telling Bustle:

“It was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing, and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’”

The actress previously revealed that the original script faced ‘drastic’ changes after she signed in. Her words continued:

“But it was a real learning experience, and of course, it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”

Sony remains tight-lipped about the streaming release date for ‘Madame Web,’ leaving fans and critics alike waiting to see if the film can find a second life online.
