Anya Taylor-Joy Has One Disappointment With Mad Max Role: She Wanted To Shave Her Head

The star of the upcoming ‘Mad Max’ movie recently talked about her character’s appearance.

In a chat with Empire Magazine for a cover story, Anya Taylor-Joy revealed the behind-the-scenes of bringing her role as Furiosa to life. She said she felt an instant connection to the character after reading the script:

“But I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests.”

Yet, the actress was disappointed by some of the director’s choices for her look:

“I was so excited to shave my head. Then George [Miller] saw me in real life, and went, ‘No, we can’t!’”

Charlize Theron’s Shaved Head For The Original Look

The role of Furiosa, previously brought to life by Charlize Theron in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ is revisited in this prequel with Taylor-Joy stepping into the younger version of the character.

Miller was nervous about the head-shaving part when Theron played the part, as well. The actress once shared with Bustle that they tried many looks, including a ponytail, that would fit into the ‘Mad Max’ world. Then, she recalled:

“I had done a press junket, my hair was really fried. I had a night where I thought, ‘What if we just shave it?’ I called George, I woke him up at 3 a.m., and he was really quiet. Then I could hear him breathe, like he took a deep breath, and I took that as a positive.”

The Upcoming Film’s Details

The new ‘Mad Max’ film, set to hit theaters on May 24, 2024, is both a spin-off and a prequel to ‘Fury Road.’ It promises to explore Furiosa’s backstory over a span of 15 years, leading up to the events of the 2015 film.

The cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Dr. Dementus and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in an undisclosed role.
