The Marvels’ Teyonah Parris Asks Fans To ‘Give A Fair Shot’ To MCU Sequel

The sequel to 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’ marked the lowest point at the box office for Marvel Studios.

When ‘Captain Marvel’ debuted in 2019, it opened with a booming $153 million at the domestic box office. But ‘The Marvels’ faced a tougher crowd, earning just $47 million in its opening weekend.

While many fans have been tying the movie’s failure to its quality and the ongoing ‘superhero fatigue,’ Teyonah Parris asked the viewers to give it a chance before criticizing it. In a chat with People, the Monica Rambeau actress said:

“I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it. If you don’t like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness.”

Her words went on:

“You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion. And if you did, then that’s fair. That’s how you feel, and I cannot take that from you.”

She Sacrificed A Lot To Get Into The Superhero Costume

The release of ‘The Marvels’ came right after the end of the actors’ strike, limiting the promotional efforts by the film’s stars, including Teyonah Parris, Brie Larson, and Iman Vellani. For Parris, this was a missed opportunity to promote a role she deeply cares about, having first portrayed Monica Rambeau in ‘WandaVision.’

The actress expressed a desire to have one-on-one meetings with fans for the movie’s PR while also sharing the personal sacrifices she and her family made for the MCU role:

“My family sacrificed a lot too, for me to be able to go away for a year. So, I think about those things and try not to engage in things that aren’t positive, because there’s a lot going on in the world. A lot. I have to protect my peace.”

Regarding the future of her character in the MCU, Parris admitted to not knowing anything official yet.
