Did Jason Momoa Just Spill The Beans? Duncan Idaho’s Possibility To Return For ‘Dune: Part Three’ Explained

Rumors are swirling about Duncan Idaho’s return in the upcoming ‘Dune: Part Three.’

Jason Momoa first stepped into the role of Duncan Idaho in the 2021 film ‘Dune,’ playing a warrior loyal to Duke Leto of House Atreides and a friend to the Duke’s son, Paul. Duncan’s journey ended with a heroic stand, fighting off enemies to protect Paul and his mother after a betrayal.

Momoa’s recent comments have fans buzzing about the possibility of his return to the ‘Dune’ universe. In an interview with Men’s Health, the actor teased his likely involvement in the future of ‘Part Three,’ but kept the details to himself:

“It’ll be a good future now if Duncan Idaho may have some sort of … You know what we did have? Oh man, I can’t actually say this. I’ll get in trouble. F*ck. Well, there was something that was really cool that went into the movie that didn’t make the first one, and it was pretty epic… I’ll try to get it back. I’ll try to get it back in the third one.”

His Return Is Possible

Duncan Idaho’s death was a significant and an explicit moment in the first ‘Dune’ film, directed by Denis Villeneuve. But the continuation of his story in Frank Herbert’s books leaves room for his return.

In the book ‘Dune: Messiah,’ Duncan is brought back as a ghola, a clone of his former self who has to show effort to regain his past memories. This opens the door for Momoa’s character to reappear in ‘Dune: Part Three,’ especially since the movie is expected to draw from the second book.

Third Film Is In The Works

Though Warner Bros. hasn’t officially announced ‘Dune: Part Three,’ director Denis Villeneuve is already working on the script. Villeneuve is keeping details under wraps as he is in the early stages of this project. Speaking to Den of Geek, the director shared:

“I think you cannot avoid Paul’s terrible purpose, that’s the structure of this whole enterprise. Saying this, I do not like to comment on ‘Dune: Messiah’ because I’m writing it, and when I’m writing, I love to shut up because it’s a very delicate time where things are fragile, ideas evolve. I like to talk about movies when they are alive, finished, and strong enough to walk by themselves. ‘Dune: Messiah’ is barely an embryo.”

With the success of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ anticipation for the third film is high. On the other hand, considering Villeneuve’s busy schedule and the complexity of the ‘Dune’ universe, the next installment might not hit theaters until at least 2027.
